Introduction to Master Project

Modern experimental high-energy physics relies on the analysis of millions of events and thus puts large demands on the use of software. For students who wants to do projects in our division we organize an introduction to facilitate the transition from more theoretical studies to experimental data analysis.

The course runs for up to 3 weeks and there is teaching and supervised work Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10-15. The idea is that you will have to do most of the work yourself on the computer that will be made available to you, so it will be a very hands-on course.

The introduction covers:

  • Week 1. Linux, Emacs (editor), latex (reports), compilers (Makefile), ooffice (presentations)
  • Week 2. C++ and ROOT (programming/analysis)
  • Week 3. Grid and software specific to the different experiments (ATLAS and ALICE)
