Nobody could expect Kulik's early goal will be the only one. It was
scored in the first Zenit's attack, when Ugarov rushed through the right
flank, and crossed the ball to the spot area. The ball hung too high in
the air as Kulik burst into the box, but nevertheless he managed to
'polozhit korpus' and to shot the volley into the far goal corner.
Khapov's jump was totally useless as the ball rebounded insidiously from
the grass and whisked in the net right over goalie's hands.
The crowd blasted, and the fans unfolded their placards with desired score
written on: "Zenit-Alania 7:2". Transparent allusion.
Vladikavkaz reacted immediately. Pagayev broke through the right flank,
outplayed three defenders, and sent the ball towards the goal box corner.
There was Sergeyev's head waiting for an opportunity to punch something.
But no way! Zenit keeper Berezovsky who made the Portuguese cry as he
stayed dry protecting the Armenian net three days ago, was not going to
allow a goal this time too. So his hands grabbed the ball before forward's
hair could reach it.
That was all. Zenit was dominating while Alanian showed little desire to
equalize. Piter had the only forward Kulik, another one -- an experienced
one I must say -- Sergey Dmitriyev poisoned himself very badly, but still
had the heart to appear as sub on 76th min. Zazulin and Khomukha played
very good on flanks, also did Oleg Dmitriyev and Danilov in the middle.
Four of them hurried on to help the forward every time Kulik went ahead.
Alanian defence headed by ace Tetradze didn't even know which one out of
The Five should they mark at the moment.
On 12th, Khomukha was absolutely alone in the Caucasians' box, but he was
just a second late to make his diving header and hit Dmitriyev's precious
cross.
The ref Kozhukhov made himself noticed in the middle of first half.
Yanovsky said to him something insulting, ref beckoned to him menacingly
but hadn't showed a card. Neither red nor yellow. Couple of minutes later
his whistle singed when Kulik had been streaming away one-on-one with
Khapov. The large color stadium board showed a replay, and the crowd got
mad as everybody had seen Zenit's captain started running from his own
half of the field. The ref said something soothing to Kulik and gave a
'sporny myach'. (Hey somebody help me with this term!)
It is very strange the champions of Russia made their first shot (that
went very wide) as deep in the first time as 30th minute!, when Sergeyev
mishit a long passing move. Vladikavkazians were able to play level with
Zenit only in the dying minutes of the first half. In the same time, Zenit
had two excellent scoring chances, but unfortunately Kulik who had chitted
two defenders one time and got the ball by tackling carefully Shelia (who
seemed to be asleep) another time, wasn't able to kick the ball the way he
needed.
After the break, two Alanian subs, Bitarov and Botsiyev, took no effect.
Alania were still totally helpless in offence, and this was the result of
well done work by Zenit's defence conducted by Bokov and Kondrashov. The
only (!!!) shot on target was made by young Bitarov who hit from 13 meters
in the lower corner, but Berezovsky was great, he sent it to the corner.
Zenit was keeping assaulting Khapov's goal. Kulik The Restless Woodcock
had twice more chances, and Danilov was unlucky on 80th as he tried to
curve the ball into the far corner from 12 meters. On the last minute,
Kulik beat five rivals at once and earned a free kick. The crowd stood to
clap him as the ref gave the final whistle.
