Lokomotiv Moscow, reduced to 10 men in the 61st minute when Yevgeny
Kharlachev was sent off for a second bookable offence, held on to beat
Croatia's Varteks Varadzin 1-0 in Moscow. Lokomotiv took the lead in
the 12th minute. Igor Cherevchenko ran on to a perfectly-weighted pass
down the middle, headed the ball down and shot home.

A sluggish Benfica struggled to overcome Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0 on
Thursday in a second round European Cup Winners' Cup match and
may regret a series of missed chances when they travel to Russia
for the return leg. Joao Pinto put Benfica in front with a close
range goal in the eighth minute but the Lisbon side failed to
make their clear superiority count when it came to scoring. In a
scrappy match, Benfica lacked the speed and penetration to break
down a resolute Lokomotiv who spent most of the game pinned back
in their own half. Joao Pinto could do no better than drive the
ball against goalkeeper Sergei Ovchinnikov when given a clear run
on goal in the opening minutes of the second half. Several more
fine saves by the Russian denied an increasingly anxious Benfica
a two-goal advantage to take to Moscow in a fortnight's time.

Benfica skipper Joao Vieira Pinto headed a
last-minute goal against 10-man Lokomotiv Moscow to earn his side a
3-2 win in the second leg of their European Cup Winners' Cup second
round match on Thursday.
They won 4-2 on aggregate.
Lokomotiv Moscow led twice on the night but the dismissal of Sergei
Gurenko on the half hour for his second bookable offence, a tackle
from behind, proved too much of a handicap.
They went ahead in the ninth minute when Andrei Solomatin picked up
a through ball on the edge of the penalty area, evaded a sliding
tackle and scored from a tight angle.
The Russians had the ball in the net again early in the second half
but the effort was ruled offside. Within seconds Romanian Nicu
Panduru had equalised from the edge of the penalty area.
Oleg Garas gave Lokomotiv the lead after 58 minutes following a
brilliant solo run into the penalty area but Candido equalised
within five minutes.
